Mombasa town, with its history going back nearly 2000 years, is Kenya's second largest town.
The town is a mixture of: Old Town, with its narrow winding streets where muezzins can be heard calling the faithful to prayer in the early hours of the morning, a bustling fish market, and an imposing fortress, Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and dominates the entrance to the Dhow harbour, and Modern Mombasa, with its luxury beach hotels, its streets lined with modern shopfronts jostling for the purchaser's eye, the ultra modern bridge connecting the island with the mainland, and its many modern industries & refineries.
