Just over a century ago, Nairobi was just a swamp in the middle of the country. It owes its beginnings to one man's fanatical determination to build a railway line from the coast to Lake Victoria.

George Whitehouse the General Manager of Uganda Railways simply designated "Nyrobi" (place of cool waters), as a railhead before the attempt to ascend the eastern shoulders of the great Rift Valley.

From the primitive shanty town that formed around the railhead, Nairobi has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan city of over two million inhabitants. Nairobi is a fascinating melting pot of all cultures and everywhere you can see churches, mosques, synagogues & temples.

Situated 1670metres above sea level, it offers an invigorating climate. A Headquarter City of the United Nations, Nairobi also hosts a multitude of diplomatic missions and non-governmental organizations. It has a large expatriate community.

It is a city of contradictions with large mansions and beautiful gardens co-existing with huge slum areas in shanty towns. Its unique feature is the Nairobi National Park situated a stone's throw away from the city. Where else in the world can you view Big Game within sight of the city skyline. The city has a busy Central Business District with smart skyscrapers and also has big shopping malls spread out over the city. It has a prolific nightlife with restaurants, casinos, discotheques, theatres, cinemas, bowling alleys, water parks, pubs & bars in all four corners of the city. An avid golfer - no problem! Nairobi has some of the finest golf courses with a large professional membership, and hosts a number of international golf tournaments.
