Situated in north eastern Kenya, this is a landscape of arid wasteland with sparse vegetation and little or no game, except for the broad swathe cut by the Uaso Nyiro River where lush vegetation and game is plentiful.
This forms the Samburu Game Reserve and is one of the few reserves in Kenya that is home to Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, rare Beisa oryx, the long necked gerenuk and the blue shanked Somali ostrich.
The colorful Samburu people, cousin to the Maasai, inhabit this region, and excursions can be arranged to visit the manyattas in a culture where time seems to have frozen. The Uaso Nyiro River runs through the Reserve and large populations of crocodile can be seen on sandbanks, while large herds of hippo congregate in the permanent pools. You may see herds of elephant bathing in the river in unconscious pleasure.
