A Complete Discovery Of The East , Madagascar

"Perinet - The Canal des Pangalanes"

This 5-Night/6-Day trip allows us to discover the eastern side of the Red Island.

We cross the corridor of primary forest covering the steep slopes which tumble down into the Indian Ocean.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park (Perinet) has unique wildlife, orchids & other rare plants, many species of Lemurs, reptiles and amphibians.

All this can explored on foot between waterfalls, rivers and rain forests.

There is no beach stay, but you can add a beach extension in Sainte Marie especially during the months between July & September, due to the humpback whales season in the Indian Ocean.

The trip begins and ends in Antananarivo. In case your flight arrives after 2 p.m. you will have to spend an extra night in Antananarivo.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo. Met by your guide and drive directly to Andasibe National Park, which is located east of the island. This is one of the main roads of the country, which is heading to the important sea port Toamasina, so expect heavy traffic. Leave the highlands by the steep slope of Mandraka where the forest starts. Arrive Andasibe in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Mantadia Lodge (3-star).

Day 2: After breakfast, walk into the forest to discover this protected area which is mainly rain forest that is peculiar to the eastern part of Madagascar. The park provides a habitat for rare and/or endemic species of rain forest, a remarkable biodiversity. Here we meet the biggest lemur, Indri Indri - this species has fascinating family behavior, which your guide will explain to you. Other species living in the forest are bamboo lemur (Hapalemur Griseus), woolly lemur (Avahi Laniger) etc. The flora is very interesting and there are many medicinal plants. Drive to Manambato through the Ravinala road, then go by boat in the Pangalanes Channel to Akanin'ny Nofy. Dinner and overnight at Palmarium.

Day 3: After breakfast, visit the Palmarium Reserve, where you will spend the morning exploring and discovering Malagasy fauna. Afternoon free at leisure, where you can either relax in the balcony of your bungalow, or walk around, or take an optional excursion to the villages in the surrounding areas. Later in the afternoon, join other guests of the lodge to see Akoholahy Island where you can encounter the strangest Lemurs ever, the Aye Aye. Dinner and overnight at Palmarium.

Day 4: Today, after breakfast, you will take the boat up the Canal des Pangalanes, which was built at the beginning of the last century, running along the east coast in over 400 kms from Toamasina to Manakara. This canal links up lakes, ponds and rivers, but is not very well maintained nowadays. You will take the boat for approximately 3 hours, passing through Rasoabe, Rasoamasay and Ampitabe Lakes, to Toamasina river port, where you will be picked up and transferred by car to your hotel. Dinner and overnight at Calypso Hotel.

Day 5: After breakfast, transfer to Tamatave Airport for your flight to Antananarivo. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel via a city tour. In case your flight is scheduled for the afternoon departure, you will go for a visit to a botanical garden and zoo, located approximately an hour away from Tamatave. Dinner and overnight at Palissandre Hotel & Spa.

Day 6: Today, after breakfast, you will be transferred to the Airport for your international flight back home.
